History

First known as Columbus Wine Company, it was Fate D. Leebern’s company who unloaded the first rail carload of legal liquor in Georgia following the end of Prohibition in 1938. For more than 80 years, four generations of the Leebern family have led the charge to become one of the Southeast’s leading full service beverage distributors, selling imported and domestic spirits, wines, beers and specialty products.

Growth

Originating in August of 1938 Columbus Wine Company incorporated and became Georgia Crown Distributing Co. in September 1949. Through the next 80 years, the Company continued to grow extending outward across Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee.

In 1990 Georgia Crown entered the Home and Office bottled water delivery service as Poland Spring Natural Water. A purchase of Dahlonega Pure Water Company in 1992 created Georgia Crown’s own private label spring water, Melwood Springs Water. In 1999 a new production facility was built amid five springs on 60 acres of protected wilderness in Blue Ridge, Georgia and currently bottles and distributes Melwood Springs and private label spring water.

In July 2004 Georgia Crown built a central facility for state-wide operations in Georgia in the city of McDonough. With this facility, Georgia Crown became one of the first alcoholic beverage distributors to consolidate operations and distribute state-wide from one location using demountable trucks. Due to the success of the operation in Georgia, a central facility for state-wide operations in Alabama was opened in Alabaster, Alabama in 2012.

In 2008 the company purchased United Liquors in Memphis, Tennessee and began operating as TCD Co. A few years later in 2012, Southwestern Wine and Liquors was acquired and operates today as Crown Logistics and Tennessee Crown Distributing Co. in Memphis, Tennessee.
